Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.
The criminal group stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, officials stated.
The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.
Community members disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.
