As Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Popular Image Shows Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the iconic coast as her personal space. On that particular weekend night, she, like many local residents, detected pops reverberating through the community.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the street, speaking to a pair who had hurried up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. The person was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to get away from, while holding that large equipment and without footwear … He moved into something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to go in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort sprinting.”

A Symbol of Heroism Amidst Chaos

The photo that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many acts of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, police and paramedics caring for numerous those hurt.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to be shared by the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the scene of the attack becoming a impromptu hospital. It was shared that colleagues were also seen taking action, including entering the surf to rescue people who were struggling.

Following the attack, messages of support flooded in. An online statement shared thanks for the individuals who demonstrated that “kindness will always overcome evil”.

The group of rescuers issued a communication, saying they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive messages and support. We are deeply moved by the kindness for our responders,” the group commented. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it aids those involved.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many professional beach safety officers, said that the team acted heroically from the second the shooting began until late that night.

“We have heard so many powerful accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“Our lifeguards exhibit dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic beaches protected for the public, but what we witnessed on that evening should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have observed in the presence of such darkness.”
